Pediatrics - Developmental, Behavioral & Learning Disorders

Our goal is to help your child achieve his/her full potential by learning about their specific situation and diagnosing and treating your child's cognitive and/or behavioral challenges.

Dr. Ross evaluates your child's strengths and weaknesses in the eight brain functions (attention, memory, sequential skills, spatial awareness, language, motor skills, higher order cognition and social abilities), which are required to be successful in learning to read, write and do math. These tests supplement school evaluations that determine your child's grade level in reading, math and written language. Dr. Ross' testing identifies the source or underlying cause of the problems causing difficulties in the academic subjects and helps to provide specific treatments.

You will become educated about your child's strengths and weaknesses and a written report will help the school system develop an individualized treatment program to promote your child's academic, behavioral, emotional and social success.

We provide medical evaluation and treatment to children up to the age of 14 with any of these conditions:

  • Developmental delays in language, motor, learning and social skills
  • Behavioral problems involving defiant and oppositional behavior and temper outbursts
  • AD/HD, learning difficulties, poor school performanc
  • Autistic spectrum disorders
  • Emotional problems of typical children such as anxiety and mood disorders

Intake & Evaluation Process

Intake

When calling our office to schedule your first appointment, we will help you to determine that we can provide the appropriate services for your child and send out several questionnaires for you and your child's teacher to complete. We ask that these be returned at least three days before the first office visit. As a courtesy, we will also check current insurance eligibility and referral needs prior to each visit.

Evaluation Process

  1. We gather an extensive developmental, educational, behavioral, medical and family history about your child from parents, care providers and teachers. This information is scored, reviewed and expanded upon when Dr. Ross meets with the family.
  2. In the presence of the family, Dr. Ross does a neurodevelopmental evaluation and interview with your child. This provides information about your child's auditory and visual processing abilities, motor control, and various kinds of memory, behavior, attention, activity, and organizational skills. Testing gives Dr. Ross the opportunity to listen, observe, interact with your child and determine his or her child's strengths and challenges.
  3. Your child is weighted and measured and a physical and neurological examination is performed.
  4. All the information from the multiple sources is processed and utilized in making a diagnosis and for constructing an intervention plan. The plan involves developmental, educational, behavioral, and medical recommendations. A comprehensive report of all this information is developed and is provided to the parents/care providers and referring physician.
  5. Dr. Ross meets with you, and sometimes your child, to review the report and discuss her impressions and recommendations, to educate about the conditions/diagnoses, to make referrals to outside providers and to educational materials and to answer any questions.
