Dr. Wessman is a graduate of Hope College (BA) and The Ohio State University (MA, MD). He completed his Internal Medicine residency and Cardiology fellowship at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, California (NMCSD). Dr. Wessman served as a Medical Corps officer in the United States Navy for 23 years, promoting to the rank of Captain (O-6). During his Navy career, Dr. Wessman served as internal medicine chief resident, Cardiology fellowship program director, Cardiology Clinic director, and Echocardiography Lab director at NMCSD. He also served as Undersea Medicine department head and Operational & Undersea Medicine deputy director at Naval Medical Research Center in Silver Spring, Maryland. Dr. Wessman was a staff cardiologist at NMCSD and Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland.
His final position was as the Specialty Leader for all Navy cardiologists. Dr. Wessman's awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and NMCSD Master Clinician Award. Dr. Wessman is a fellow in the American College of Physicians, American College of Cardiology, and American Heart Association. His professional interests include general cardiology, preventive cardiology, and sports cardiology, and echocardiography.
