    Biography
    Dr. James L. Scharfen is a fellowship-trained gastroenterologist and hepatologist committed to providing evidence-based, patient-centered care. He completed his undergraduate studies in Health and Human Biology, earned his medical degree, and completed his internal medicine residency at Brown University, where he received the Golden Stethoscope Award and the Fain Clinic Award for clinical excellence. He went on to complete his subspecialty fellowship training in Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Mount Sinai Morningside/West, earning the Fellowship Achievement Award for Clinical Excellence. Throughout his career, Dr. Scharfen has maintained a strong dedication to clinical research, medical education, and community leadership. His scholarly work spans endoscopic advancements, liver pathology, and public health initiatives. Additionally, he has served in key systemwide leadership roles focused on ethics and medical education at Mount Sinai in New York City. Dr. Scharfen approaches patient care as a true partnership, taking the time to listen, explain diagnostic and treatment options, and align medical recommendations with each patient's individual goals.
