Dr. McDermott has specialized training in reverse total shoulder as well as Mako Robotic assisted patient specific hip and knee replacement.

He attended Creighton University for both undergraduate and medical school. As president of his medical school class, Dr. McDermott received the Ciba-Geigy Publication Award for scholastic achievement and leadership, and was elected to the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society. He received his commission from the United States Navy as a recipient of the Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship, and went on to complete his internship in Basic Surgery at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, California. He served four years as an Air-Wing flight surgeon and deployed to the Persian Gulf aboard the USS Nimitz before returning to the Naval Medical Center in San Diego for his orthopaedic residency.

As a resident he received numerous awards for research, to include the Smith Nephew Richards 15th Annual Orthopaedic Resident Research Conference; Best Resident Scientific Paper Award in 1997 and the prestigious American Orthopaedic Association-Zimmer Travel Award in 1999. Upon completion of his training he received a Staff appointment to remain in San Diego as a clinical instructor of orthopaedic surgery. Dr. McDermott completed his sports medicine fellowship at Cincinnati Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in 2002 before returning to the Department of Orthopaedics in San Diego as the director of Sports Medicine where he received numerous referrals of complex patients from military orthopaedic surgeons throughout the western hemisphere. Dr. McDermott left the Navy as a full commander after fourteen years of service to his country, and entered private practice in Santa Rosa, California in September of 2004.

Dr. McDermott is co-director of The Sports Medicine Center at SRO. He is experienced in advanced arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the knee and shoulder, in addition to sports medicine, adult reconstructive, joint replacement, minimally invasive procedures, as well as general orthopaedic surgery. Dr. McDermott’s particular areas of interest include knee ligament reconstruction, shoulder stabilization and rotator cuff surgery, and he has developed a special interest in repair of the posterior cruciate ligament and multiple ligamentous injuries about the knee. He also applies his expertise in the treatment of young patients with damaged meniscus and articular cartilage, to include meniscal repair and transplantation, knee re-alignment surgery, and advanced repair and resurfacing techniques for articular cartilage injuries.
Dr. McDermott sees patients of all ages, requiring any level of orthopaedic treatment, from the adolescent with a sports injury to the active adult with osteoarthritis. His patients include Olympic, professional, collegiate, and high-school athletes, as well as injured workers and recreational athletes. He is currently the lead team physician for both Sonoma State University and for Cardinal Newman High School. He is also a former team physician for Maria Carrillo High School football and for the Santa Rosa Scorchers professional women’s tackle football team.

Dr. McDermott places high value on the role of the physical therapist in the treatment of his patients and has found that by maintaining a close, integrated relationship, personalized treatment protocols can be formulated that not only maximize surgical outcomes, but in many cases can eliminate the need for surgery altogether.

Dr. McDermott believes that all of his patients deserve the highest level of care and expertise, and is personally committed to patient satisfaction, extending the highest level of compassion and quality to every patient. This individualized personal attention allows him to work with each patient to determine which approach is best for them and ensure that all patients receive the highest level of orthopaedic care.

Dr. McDermott is married with three children and enjoys spending his free time outdoors with his family. His areas of interest include skiing, golfing, baseball, soccer and flying.
