Collaborative Approach

Our physician experts understand the importance of developing customized treatment plans that focus on the unique medical needs of each patient. We work with a team of cancer specialists at our affiliate hospitals’ Breast Centers in order to create the best treatment and healing plan possible. Our collaborative approach includes:

  • Breast Surgeons. These specialists are trained to evaluate and manage patients with breast pain, benign lumps and cysts and abnormal mammograms, in addition to breast cancer.
  • Medical Oncologists. These specialists are part of your treatment team in managing your cancer symptoms and treatment, including chemotherapy.
  • Radiation Oncologists. These specialists are experts in the use of radiation therapy to cure or reduce the symptoms of cancer.
  • Pathologists. These physicians specialize in diagnosis and treatment options through laboratory tests.
  • Radiologists. These physicians specialize in diagnosis and treatment through the use of medical imaging such as X-rays and other advanced techniques.
  • Cancer Genetics Counselor. This expert evaluates a patient’s risk for inherited medical conditions and provides counseling based on those risks.
  • Patient Navigator. This expert is a vital component of your support team and helps in navigating through the health system.
  • Rehabilitation Specialists. These specialists help patients with physical functioning reduced due to cancer and treatment with the goal of regaining normal function, rebuilding independence and returning to work.

Procedures Performed

Lymphedema Therapy

We evaluate for lymphedema early and often and provide effective therapies and methods of reducing the risk of developing lymphedema. We also teach patients how to treat their lymphedema at home. Please contact Chris Ryan, head of St Joe’s PT, at chris.ryan@stjoe.org. regarding the program.

Breast Tomosynthesis

Also called three-dimensional (3-D) mammography, or digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT), this is an advanced form of breast imaging, or mammography, that uses a low-dose x-ray system and computer reconstructions to create highly detailed three-dimensional images of the breasts. This is particularly helpful if you have dense breast tissue, which sometimes makes it harder to detect tumors, or if you’re at high risk for breast cancer.

Chemotherapy

This is the use of drugs to treat cancer. We also have the only dedicated, inpatient oncology unit in the region at Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital.

Genomic Testing

This test, performed on the tumor tissue, identifies changes in chromosomes, genes and proteins, which can influence the behavior of your tumor.

Hormone Therapy

This can be used in many aspects of breast cancer treatment, including initial risk reduction, minimizing the cancer’s risk of recurrence and preventing the cancer from spreading to other areas of the body.

MarginProbe Margin Analysis

This process enables surgeons to optimize the removal of cancer during breast conservation surgery or lumpectomies.

Nipple-Areola Sparing Mastectomy Surgery

This surgical procedure is a mastectomy without the removal of any of the nipple or skin around the areola.

Oncoplastic Surgery

This preserves the breast’s appearance by reshaping breast tissue during cancer surgery.

Partial Breast Radiation

This is delivered by an implanted device, which delivers radiation to the tumor site from inside the breast through a small catheter, rather than from an external beam.

Reconstructive Surgery

This is to restore the breast’s appearance after a mastectomy.

Sentinel Lymph Node Dissection

According to Breastcancer.org, this is the surgical removal of the first few lymph nodes that filter fluid draining away from the area of the breast that contained the breast cancer. This can often eliminate the need to remove deeper lymph nodes.

Traditional Mastectomy

This is the surgical removal of all the breast tissue.

External Beam Radiation Therapy

This procedure uses radiation aimed at destroying cancer cells and shrink tumors

Intraoperative Digital Specimen X-ray (Bioptics Machine)

This shows surgeons images of the tissue removed in less than a minute, which enables them to remove all of the cancer in just one operation

Axillary Reverse Lymphatic Mapping

This preserves the lymphatic drainage of the arm during surgery, decreasing the risk of developing lymphedema.
